After five years of reading stories about patients with osteoporosis...can we help each other here? Share insights, what's worked for building bones, what's not?
Nominally, I’d like to assemble some helpful web links for patients here to help them with any possible osteoporosis issues. I found a good site recently with tons of interesting information: Osteopenia Treatments http://www.osteopenia3.com/index.html Various bone density tests http://www.osteopenia3.com/bone-density-test.html Natural Osteopenia Treatments http://www.osteopenia3.com/Natural-Osteopenia-Treatments.html Dexa Scans http://www.osteopenia3.com/dexa-scans.html There are many other sites out there, but this site seems to offer specific and deep levels of information that may help spine patients. Way to go, Kate! Has one else out there found some exceptionally helpful sites for spine patients?

I've mentioned it before but a very good off-line resource is Osteoporosis: Diagnosis, Prevention, Therapy by Reiner Bartl and Bertha Frisch. Bartl is one of the big names in Germany on the subject and Frisch helped him translate his German publication into English. The book is a very good explanation of base causes and reasons behind osteoporosis and points out why Vitamin D and calcium aren't going to fix all your problems.
I purchased it on the recommendation of the radiologist who performed the first Dexascan that pointed out my osteopenia and discussed the concern with me. He felt that more drastic action, compared with diet and exercise, was recommended on my part as it's pretty rare for a 40 year old male to have bone density as low as mine.

The book is very readable, including cartoons to lighten the feel and convey points better. It's probably a touch too dense for an average, "I'm not really worried about osteoporosis", patient but right in line for a "I know I have a problem and need to get it fixed before my surgery" patient.

I'm don't have much to offer in this area. I know the generalities but not the specifics. It may be of value to read up on vitamin D research in addition to osteoporosis info. Here's one website that can help with that:
www.vitamindcouncil.org That about taps me out. I'd suggest checking reviews of the book previously mentioned to get some idea of its readability. -tc-

Thanks for this thread.
Jim, have you had tests (what kind, metabolic endrocrinological/don't wanna go to www.wrongdiagnosis.com ) to find out what's driving your poor bone density? I wish I could read journals on bone physiology. Be well...
