Very glad to hear that your surgery was a success, but understand that cervical laminoplasty is in no way a replacement for ADR (or fusion) if someone has DDD (Degenerative Disc Disease). A cervical laminoplasty relieves pressure on the spinal cord caused by a narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis), by cutting through the lamina (vertebral bone) and putting in 'wedges" to keep the opening large enough for the spinal cord to pass through with no pressure. If your pain was coming from degenerated discs (as it is for many on this board with neck pain), this procedure would be worthless. The painful discs must be removed to stop the pain, and once the discs are removed there are only two options---fuse the vertebra, or replace the diseases discs with artificial ones. You probably have not seen mention of the laminoplasty procedure on this board not so much because few doctors do it, but more because most people here with neck & arm pain suffer from DDD and not stenosis.

Thank you.You made some great clarifications which will be of value to others . Until this was offerred to me the only alternative I was offerred in the past 3 years was a 4 level cervical fusion. So for me it was indeed a replacement for a fusion and hopefully an alternative for others to consider who have stenosis.

Safety Engineer,
It sounds like you've had a wonderful outcome from your surgery and that is indeed exciting, Congratulations !!!! Another point I would like to make concerning all of this is how important a proper diagnosis is. There are many surgical interventions that can be done on a person but there is no substitute for a good physical exam that defines the individuals proper medical issues prior to a "fix" being performed. While many of us here have complex issues surrounding our spine it sounds like your medical team pinpointed the exact cause of your pain and went ahead with the proper treatment. Welcome to the other side and again congratulations on your wonderful outcome
