Finding a way Forward Pain affects our lives in many ways. Have you ever ended up disappointed because your pain has prevented you from doing something you planned or hoped to do? Perhaps you'd hoped to meet someone, go shopping, go walking, or just be able to move around more easily? Unfortunately, not everything in life turns out the way you would have preferred, especially when you have pain to deal with too. However, it's best if we don't let disappointment and negative thinking about what should have been spoil the rest of our day or even hold us back from trying again. Remember that success was never built on pure success! More often, success is built upon a series of failures, flare-ups or setbacks that have been examined and used for making changes in some way. So, why not regard things that go wrong as opportunities not failures and disappointments. Why not look at each occurrence as an opportunity to learn. Then set-to again with renewed vigour and enthusiasm with new plans and goals in mind. Use any disappointment as a spur to put all you have into the new goal. Go about it wholeheartedly without backward glances to what might have been or could have been. You'll find your new plans will be even better than before. So, go ahead, use the past for learning from, make new choices, attempt more projects, explore new ideas. Dont let disappointment hold you down, use it to propel you forward! This could be your great opportunity to learn even better 'pacing' skills, relaxation methods, find a new therapist or some other way of controlling your pain and/or making life easier or more enjoyable. There is always a way forward! Remember the painSupport motto: "Think about what you CAN do, not what you can't" ...and work your way forward from there. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TOOL KIT - If you liked this idea why not write it in your Tool Kit notebook of self-help pain relief methods. If you haven't started one yet, why not keep a special notebook as your Tool Kit to remind you of techniques and skills for coping with pain. Your Tool Kit is especially useful when pain flares up. It will give you constructive ideas to focus upon. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ WORDS OF WISDOM ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The secret of health and happiness for both body and mind is not to mourn for the past, nor to worry about the future, but to live the present moment wisely. - - Buddha ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AND FINALLY... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A man is recovering from surgery when a nurse asks him how he is feeling. "I'm O.K. but I didn't like the four-letter-word the doctor used in surgery," he answered. "What did he say," asked the nurse. "OOPS!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Keep smiling! If you would like more information on self help pain relief, please go to my website, www.painsupport.co.uk or contact me for details of my CDs, tapes and books which contain many more ideas for relaxation, pain and stress relief. What an inspiring way to look at pain! While I am hoping that I never have back pain again, I know I probably will, and that this is a good opportunity for me to use it as a learning excercise, and propel me forward! I will print off this post to keep at my desk at work to keep me in positive spirits -- thanks so much Alastair! SenecaGirl
