Default Going off Gabapentin

My husband's having a bit of back pain and is worried about the kidney damage side effect of gabapentin. Since his surgery is in three weeks, he's thinking about going from 3/day to 2/day and if he can tough it out, going off the gabapentin all together.

Has anyone tried weening themselves off this med or have an suggestions.

Hi Kim,

I've never had to wean off of gabapentin but if your husband is on a fairly high dose I know they make 100mg capsules and you could do a slower a wean by going down 100mg at time. For some people who are really sensitive to drugs, a slower wean might be the better way to go. I did do a slow wean off of Lyrica (same class of drug) and did fine.

Thanks Meggie Lyn,
The doctor said he could reduce to two pills per day (he was taking 300mg pills 3x per day. He's gone down to two and the back pain is lessened, but the arm pain is skyrocketing. The neck will be fixed soon, but kidney damage could last a lifetime.

Default Neurontin

I have been on a high dose of Neurontin for a long time, & I did not know anything about kidney damage!
Neurontin helps me enormously (in high doses) with my nerve pain, no Dr. has ever said anything to me about kidney damage.

I have quit abrubtly & weaned myself off of it, when I quit abrubtly I got a bad headache & felt terrible, when I weaned my myself off I had no problem. It wasn't difficult at all, he can't be taking more than I was, so I don't see any problem. Best of luck, & thanks for the info!
peace&love Julie

Kidney problems and suicide are the main side effects that I've read about. He never had any suicide thoughts, but he went postal a few times (non weapon version).
Anyway, he's down to one 200 mg pill twice a day. The pains pretty serious at the level, but his kidneys feel much better.
Through this process, I've found that you have to do a lot of the research yourself. This forum is a good place for info.
