Default Food for Thought...

Hi Gil,

This may feed your concerns, so I don't know if this previous topic is helpful to you. But I am glad I looked into this a while back, as it was a real eye-opener to me!

Injections: know what's being injected!
Injections: know what's being injected!

Th information therein could explain why some docs are not big supporters of injections.

Let us know what you think after read some of the articles. There's a lot to absorb (punny, eh?).

Default Epidurals

Gil,

I've had good luck with them when they were ordered correctly. My pain management doctor works off of the orthopedic surgeon's prescription. The 4 injections ordered by the good ortho worked for months at a time.

I screwed some of them up by traveling too much, overexertion or medical procedure(s) i.e myleogram & EGM.

It seems like I always have amplified pain immediately afterward for a week or two. Once that subsides the pain is always lessoned to a degree (if it's ordered for the right location).

My opinion is that a visit with the pain management doctor a week or so before the injection you should get a written schedule of medication to be injected, go home and research the antisthetic/ steroid/ cortesone compounds to be used. If you're not satisfied, call his office to discuss your reservations. Mine has been more than open to this type of arrangement.

He's a great doctor and has a remarkable memory. He can recite, verbatum, everything said in our office visits. He's about 90 pounds (wet) and almost 5 feet tall. The first injection, he warned me I'd feel a little prick. With me laying face down on the table with my shorts halfway down, I couldn't help laughing. He went directly to a nerve root. I chalked it up to "lessons learned".

Just remember, it's your body and your decision. If your doctor isn't willing to address your concerns, you can always fire him and find another.

It looks like you have a lot of others with input to consider. That's the great thing about this forum, a wide variety of experiences and knowledge to draw from.

Good luck Gil. I hope your pain subsides soon.

Bob

Gil,

From everything I've heard, albeit from friends and family, the injections only work temporarily anyway. I think I'd be more interested in getting to the root of the problem and keeping my nerves, etc. in the best shape possible for the longest amount of time.

Not that I'm knowledgeable, or that you asked, but I think you did the right thing.
