Which of these types of NSAID's are still available?

I take Indomethacin. It's a NSAID, but that's all I know. I have been told it's normally hard on the stomach........doesn't bother me, though.

The drugs taken off the market are Cox inhibitors (Vioxx) and Celebrex and Bextra are under the gun too I believe.. Tho Nsaids (non steroidal antiinflammatory ) like Motrin, Naprosyn, and the like are still available.

There are Cox 1 & Cox 2 inhibitors. The Cox 2 ones are definitely under fire - however, the Cox 1 - type, the last I checked were okay. I will need to look it up again. I was taking a Cox 1 called "Mobic". You only have to take it once a day. It was "marketed" as a Cox 2 because of the dosing frequency is once or twice a day. (I took it twice a day) but really it's a Cox 1 inhibitor. Mobic basically is like another anti-inflammatory called Feldene which takes me back a ways in my nursing career.

However, the downfall with both Mobic & Feldene is just like the rest: GI irritation..... AND they are EXPENSIVE (Mobic)!

I know of Indomethacin, my father has been on that for years.

The reason I am asking is because a consulatnt has recommended my mother tries something stronger than ibuprofen while she is waiting for a knee replacement.

He talked of vioxx being taken off and celebrex being under fire but he mentioned another of these types he recommends and I think it begins with R. Anyway I am trying figure out what it is so I can read up on it.

Naprosyn/naproxen(SP?)(a.k.a. alleve) was recently mentioned also as increasing risk of heart attacks. Just something to be aware of if you have any heart problems or have a family history of it.

ketoprofen is also still availible.

I have GI issues with NSAIDs and I got ketaprofen in a transdermal creme from a compounding pharmacy so it didn't cause GI problems (It wasn't for my spine issues, so you have to check with a doctor or pharmacist if that would work for spine issues)
