Well, it looks like I am probably going to be getting fusion of C6-7 and C7-T1 on top of an existing congenital fusion at C5-6. The Ortho spine surgeon I am leaning towards is recommending the Globus Coalition implants with hip graft packing. He tells me it is a PEEK spacer with a lagged plate attached to it for improved stability. I can find the press release from June 2009 about the implant on many sites, but no images or other information. Does anyone know anything more or have any experience with it?
On a related note, any pros or cons on spine surgery from a spine specialist ortho surgeon vs a neuro surgeon? Thanks!

Zymerist,
I don't know if you're better off using a neurosurgeon or orthopedic surgeon. I've had three cervical spine surgeries on four levels, each of which was by a neurosurgeon (two different gentlemen; Richard Naftalis and Pablo Clavel). Each time each man had my COMPLETE confidence (and still do to this day). Rather than the neurosurgeon (Clavel) on the last surgery, I almost used an orthopedic surgeon (Jack Zigler). Dr Zigler also had my COMPLETE confidence. Sorry I can't be more definitive, but that is my experience. Good luck, and please keep us updated. Jeff

Thanks Jeff,
Both of the Docs I am working with come very highly recommend from friends in the medical fields, and I am comfortable and confident in both of them. It may come down to which fusion method I am most comfortable with. I feel quite lucky to have the choice of top talent within an HMO group.
