So, woke up Monday and my severe, (9.5) pain was gone and continues thru today. I feel a little crazy. What happened?
The pain I had up until June is still present but the blinding pain of recent is gone. Yona says it could be that an annular tear healed or that the antibiotics helped with diskiitis. (I've possible indicators of this: open sore on hip.) I'm happy to be detoxing from opiates and narcotics but confused. I know it doesn't change whether I will have surgery, but it certainly changes the urgency! The most recent MRI from a month ago does not show an active annular tear. Any ideas? Has this happened to you? Shay

Hi Shay,
This is really interesting and good/happy news for you! Not sure what could account for the sudden turn around. Some questions if I may: Did you have any fevers/sweats/chills with the diskitis dx, how long were you on the antibiotics and is the sore on your hip healed/healing? Yona could be correct with her explanation. Hope you continue to feel better. ML

Bad news: it might just be the way pain goes. We've heard from many docs that pain goes through highs and lows. I'd suggest not stopping your research and thoughts just in case it goes back up.
Good news: if there's other reasons to think your pain should have dropped, you might be lucky. In that case, I'd still suggest not stopping your research but you've bought a lot of time.

Wow, no knowledge of this. Can your doctor explain it? That's good news though, if you had something going on that has cleared up. I would keep researching as well. My pain went in and out, but this sounds like something different.

You asked if the pain level change happened to anyone else. ?Possibly? I saw this with some other low-back patients in a swimming pool. There can be changes from a high pain level for x weeks or longer to lower, in a few days. Pain is personal. Something undefined changed on your side. |

Yes, The sore is healing and today is the last day on antibiotics so we will see what happens!
I will still go forward with plans as the acuteness of the last 4 months happened after I decided to go ahead with surgery so the original symptoms and issues are still relevant. I still need my life back! I need to sail! A sailor stuck to bed is no good at all. I will be asking all the doctors I speak to so hopefully answers will be forthcoming. Dr. Boeree suggested the discitis as well. At least I can clean out my liver for a little while, eh? Do a few PT exercises. Help with the dishes. Shay

i would have to do some reading to see if discitis could resolve w/ oral antibiotics - what were you taking?

Well, of course it could be from the antibx. It could be a lot of things, but I've always held the position that many pathologies that are "chronic" in the spine can involve microbial infections.
This has been proven in spades across the decades, did you already see all the abstracts I posted? http://www.adrsupport.org/forums/f44...l-causes-9218/ Many pages there....

Well, we had our first consultation with Dr. Boeree!
It was great to get confirmation on my diagnosis and treatment recommendation. He did mention a large annular tear on L4-5 that could have caused my recent increase in pain. He said that diskitis or the tear could have caused the pain. He recommends either fusion or ADR on L5-S1 depending on movement available. And also an ADR at L4-5. M6. I want to get clarification on the type of fusion. Other than that its was useful and clarifying to have a surgeon looking at the MRI's. I'm ready to go to the UK and get this done! But I will slow down and get the other recommendations first. Especially since I want to submit the costs to the insurance after surgery with hope they will pay something. I appreciate everyones ideas, concern and feedback of late! Oh and by the way he does not recommend discography in the states due to the type that is performed. By sticking the needle into a healthy disk as a control he believes causes increase of deterioration. If I wanted one I could have a different type in Europe, but he didn't think it was necessary in my case.FYI
