Default More Info Please

Paul, can you tell us a little more about yourself? Also, please fill out a brief description -- a signature -- that is three or four lines about your spinal situation or condition.

Thanks.

Default Nuvasive technique---called XLIF surgery

Paul,

You are referring to the XLIF surgery (Extreme Lateral Interbody Fusion), which I had performed on me about 10 weeks ago. Nuvasive is the company that makes the plastic spacer (filled with bone growth material) that goes in the disc space after they remove the diseased disc.

This minimally invasive fusion (I had my surgery at 7:30 AM and went home at 3 PM) is done through a lateral incision in your flank, via the psoas muscle. No cutting of the back muscles (posterior) or through the stomach (anterior). It gained a lot of noteriety when a UFC fighter (cage fighting) named Nate Quarry had the surgery, and was back fighting in the cage in 6 months!

I am still in the early healing stages, but the pain I had before the surgery is gone and my current pain seems to be post-op pain. You can google "XLIF" and get a lot of info like I did, including a list of surgeons that perform this cutting edge procedure (at the site for the Society of Lateral Access Surgery). That is where I found my surgeon, who has performed more XLIF surgeries than anyone in the U.S. and came very highly recommended.
