Is osteoporosis an issue in fusion surgeries which involve attaching hardware to bone?

Yes. The bone is soft.. there have been some disaterous results with persons who weren't checked for BMD and fusion was done with bone being far too soft... I recall one person that used to post at MGH and he was truly in extremely bad shape.

If I was told that I had osteoporosis in my spine I wouldn't consider surgery until perhaps I could bring my BMD levels back up with some of the medications that address that issue. Currently I have osteopenia (as of last check almost 2 years ago) and I've been taking Actonel for this as well as eating a calcium rich diet and walking at least 2-3 xs/day (weight bearing activity). Being outside in sunshine should be helping with my Vit D ...

I'm waiting until my bone density improves before getting ADR. I'm taking medication also and have made progress as I'm now real close to osteopenia instead of severe osteoporosis. I think it's important to consider how to keep your bone density up even after fusion or ADR because soft bones after the surgery could definitely cause major complications.
