Dr. Filler
Hey Melissa,
Dr. Filler diagnosed me with a mild Chiari One Malformation in 2003 (caused by another really really bad surgeon). He is an excellent diagnostician. Chirari One is really a compression of the brainstem and stops or severely slows the proper flow of spinal fluid around the back of the skull. Often it is genetic, but in my case, it was a trauma (this other surgery) which ultimately caused my cervical spine to collapse in on itself and hence, the compression. The symptoms in most cases of Chiari One are not livable with severe head pressure 24/7 and ongoing rather dramatic neurological failure. I ultimately lost my ability to walk within a few months. Being local to Los Angeles, I chose to undergo treatment for the compression with Dr. Filler, but the surgery was a disaster and I came very close to dying. He never really did acknowledge what was going on which was a severe spinal fluid leak as the bovine patch attached in surgery simply blew off post surgically. I proceeded to have the situation accessed by the Chiari Institute in Long Island. It wasn't really Dr. Filler's fault and I never blamed him for what happened. It's just that was and still is an extremely specialized neurosurgery and I learned the hard way not to have anyone but the most experienced surgeons treat this condition. I had to undergo a second decompression, this time precluded by a VP shunt surgery to offset some of the pressure in my skull. I know this is a lot of information. What I went through was completely inhumane and if I had to do it again, I would not. I would simply die. But my larger point is that I truly believe that Dr. Aaron Filler is one of the finest nerve-related pioneers out there and has performed miracles in that area of medicine. I've seen it happen. His office is tough and I spent many long days of waiting up to four hours to see him. But he is gifted and cutting edge and I would certainly consider an evaluation as I don't believe there are many, if any doctors that operate in these crevasses of nerve medicine in quite the same way as Dr. Filler. Please don't hesitate to message me if I can provide anymore information for you. Nerve pain is a monster. I have a lot of it myself from having to have the decompressions surgery repeated -- constant terrorizing pain up the back of my skull. It is somewhat responsive to pain medicine but I can only take that so far. Hope you are well today.
