Any opinions out there if a Discetomy should be performed first before ADR?
From my understanding if the pain is coming from the disc then this procedure would not work... If the procedure does work then isn't the disc still bad and in time will still need to be replaced? Am worried that my posture suffers from the bad disc and if the discetomy was succesful the posture would not improve. It find it so difficult too make a decision. My pain is not disabling but still don't want to live with it forever...

It'll probably help for a little while but probably deteriorate more and then take out you facets. I had a discectomy in 1996 and was pain free for 12 years. Unbeknownst to me tho, that disc deteriorated more and the one above it blew out.

Longroadahead,
I had a herniated L5-S1 with lots of sciatica pain with localized, acute-shooting back pain also. My Ortho said a micro-discectomy would be great for me so I had it done 1/09. Felt great for about 8 wks then began having the shooting pain again although the sciatic pain was relieved. When I went for second opinion with my neurosurgeon, he told me that he would have never performed a discectomy because that would only eliminate part of the problem because the disc needed to be removed. If you are having back pain whether chronic or acute as well as leg/buttock pain, more than likely a discectomy would not benefit you (according to my neurosurgeon). Last week my neuro said I was a great candidate for either AxiaLIF fusion or an ADR with Prodisc L. I opted for the ProDisc and am awaiting insurance approval. I feel for you and hope this little piece of info from my neuro will help you.
