Hello everyone,
Over the past few months I have done a ton of reading on ADR's. I have been on the forum reading almost everyday, although I don't post much. In all the hours of reading and research I have done, I have never found the answer to my question. For the people that have unsuccessful ADR's, I know some of it has to do with the person, doctor, and placement of the disc. But has anyone had a perfect placement, but still end up in pain due to left over disc material that they didn't completely get rid of during surgery? Thanks , Brian

Brian,
Not speaking from my own experience, but I have read of two cases of that. I don't know what resolution was applied. Good luck, Jeff

Brian, there are some people who have had "perfect placements" but have had continued pain post-operatively. As to the cause, this has been debated since we started this forum six years ago! IMHO, is has to do with the disease process which is multi-factorial.

Thanks guys! I just wasn't sure if that was a common problem and I could never find an answer.
Brian

In answer to your specific question, remaining disk material is called a sequesterer and has caused problems for some people until that stuff gets broken down (months at best) but just as Richard pointed out, that's only one of many things that can cause pain after a successful placement.

I've lost track of how many thousand people have logged into ADR Support and ADR Support was the third or fourth successive board we've been following since Laura had her surgery so we've heard a lot of stories. With enough patients, you can pretty much find any cause of problems you wish to name, from poor placement to bad drugs used during the surgery. I'm waiting for a post about the canary flying through the operating room leading to a bad surgical recovery as that's about the only story we haven't heard. That's the problem with anecdotal evidence, it's pretty lousy statistical evidence and is difficult to use to determine real likelihoods.
Don't take this as an attack on your question, though. Asking what can happen is the first step to understanding how likely something is and anecdotal evidence is the best means for determining if something can be a problem.
