Is it dangerous in your opinion Rob?

Less dangerous with the minimally invasive or endoscopic type surgery. Any surgery has its risks. Sometimes even waiting to have surgery can present its own risks re nerve damage. No easy answers. The surgery itself can also damage nerve as well. Sorry. You must weigh the + and -.

JDK,

We all feel your pain.

As much as all of us would like to give you an answer, I don't know that any of us can. EVERYone's body is different, and what might be the correct answer for me, might not be the correct answer for you. The only way to know the absolutely correct answer is the passage of time; of course afterwhich is too late. Sucks doesn't it?

I too had four huge (7mm each) bone spurs on the posterior aspect of my vertebral bodies at C3/4 and C4/5 which were digging into my spinal cord and even induced myelomalacia. The C4/5 spur was removed in 2000, and the C3/4 in 2009. Unaddressed, the C3/4 spur could have left me a quadriplegic and on a ventilator. No one knows.

You might survive another 50 years with no treatment and no additional symptoms, or you might wake up a week from Tuesday paralyzed from the neck down. As far as I know current medical technology doesn't give doctors the ability to definitively say. Again, sucks doesn't it?

I know that this post doesn't help you decide on the best course of action. In my best judgment, my decision (two M6's) was the best option to enable me to avoid paralysis and continue without intractable pain in the future. Did I make the right decision? So far so good, but I'll let you know in 15 years.

As a fellow (former) sufferer, I truly do feel your pain, and do sincerely pray that you make the right decision. At the same time ... I wish I knew what the right decision was ...

JKDE,

Here is a video of an anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. During the course of the operation the surgeon removes posterior osteophytes.
