Yesterday was the final day at the North American Spine Society's annual meeting. This is the largest spine congress in the world. In the last session, a paper was presented by Dr. Michael Zindrick titled; "Lumbar Disc Arthroplasty: Role, Patient Selection and Evidence for Efficacy vs. Traditional Treatments."

He turned his presentation towards the self-education that is happening in the patient community and put a page from ADRsupport.org up as part of his presentation. To a room full of surgeons, "If you are not reading this website, you should be."

More on this on our Ethical - Legal Issues on Arthroplasty thread (my post = #14).

Mark

OK guys
Is there anywhere I can access or read any of the papers or talks involved here? I looked through the 105 pages in Allan's post and it looked like there would be some very good info for those of us here still waiting to have surgery.
If you can lead me in the right direction to get this info thanks in advance!

Ditto to Kim's question: Are the collected papers going to be published as a special issue of a journal or a monograph, etc? Mark, did you get handouts that we can request and reimburse you for copying?

I brought home an extra copy of the proceedings. It contains an abstract of each paper presented. I also brought home some books and journals.

From prior conferences I have a copy of Karin Buettner-Janz's book, "The Artificial Disc".

I'll donate these to the forum with the understanding that people who receive them keep them for a number of weeks and pass them on. We may need a volunteer to keep a list of who wants each item, who's got 'em, etc...

It's great to see that patient information and self-advocacy is making an impact on the medical community. When we speak collectively our voices can and will be heard. Thank you Mark for passing along this information.

Mark,

Thanks for passing this along. It's great that patients' voices can be heard -- and felt -- across many circles.

I have so much to say about the aforementioned issues (Lawyers ads, the Street article which featured a Medtronic consultant) but I already said it. What we do need is more proactive stories on issues like the ones I posted. Now that I am back at work, I can not do this kind of proactive sleuthing. It's up to you guys now!

All that being said, I am working on one long term project...the patient survey. It will take some time to implement; as the survey design is critical.

Congrats, Harrison!
I am so delighted that a doc got it right and that your inspired website is being recognized.
You and Mark , and Alastair and all the long-past-surgery patients who still post here
have made an incalculable difference to me, and I am sure, hundreds of others.
