I'm open to suggestions on the correct use of a cane. Bad leg side, good leg side? Height of cane? I have to laugh when I say bad leg/good leg side because I broke my "good" leg severely 30 years ago, had seven surgeries on it, and it is now longer and skinnier than my other leg which has some post surgery weakness.

The cane should be held in the hand on the "good side" and it should be moved forward at the same time as the leg which is injured. The cane grip height, should be just slightly higher than the palm when standing up and the arm fully extended down.

I hope that helps

Hi Cervie,

I agree with Alastair....(can you believe it) Like I said yesterday it should be used on the opposite side.

I presented this question to my PT today for you and he made 2 very good points. When you walk you swing your arms in opposition to your legs so it is a more normal movement to put the cane out as you step with the week leg if the cane is on the opposite side. He also said that when the cane is on the week side you make a small base of support but when it is on the opposite side you widen your base of support. I would shoot for wide base.

Gatta love those PTs

Hi CQ,

Here are more votes for the answers submitted by Alastair and Paulette. My PT echoed the same points.
