Ernie, you got me worried. But maybe I am jumping the gun...do you have post-op pain in the hip? You probably know that this can be a transient part of the recovery process...

speaking of hips: do some of you spineys have hip pain from your spine or is it from the hip itself?

Cervie

I had a meeting with my primary doctor about two weeks ago (to order new films and for a few other issues). I had been having repeated hip pain (or so I thought) from what I thought was too much walking or some other, unknown cause. I mentioned to him piriformis syndrome as something I had come across (here). He asked me to specify an exact location and put my hand on where the pain was originating. When I indicated the sides of my hips (rather than down in the groin area) he immediately replied that this was connected to my spinal issue because actual hip joint pain would be felt lower and more centralized, as in the groin area.

In retrospect, I feel fairly confident he's correct, as my initial recovery and physical therapy from my discectomy was followed by much increased power walking, something I like to do for exercise anyway. That was around the time the 'hip' pain began, and I could never figure out why I was getting this pain when previous to my ruptured disc I had done 30-45 minute power walking every day without incident. As my disc continued to flatten and my back became more painful, my ability to walk decreased (coinciding with the onset of winter here) to the point that I purchased a stationary bike to get aerobic exercise. The bike has helped a lot, although it still causes a little of the same pain, but bearable, and only upon dismounting from the bike.

I especially feel this hip pain if I've been sitting somewhere for more than about 15 minutes and then go to stand up. I've learned to just rise slowly, with my head upright, and stretch out (by extension of the back) before taking that first, critical step.

At 61 years, no longer qualifying for trials due to my age (chronological, not physical or mental).

2009 - Working on improving bone density or getting rich so I can go to Germany, where medicine and insurance have gone beyond the Stone Age.

With my L4-5 rupture (14mm), the major problem was hip pain. I could not sit for more than a few minutes. I paced endlessly at meetings and around the house.

We took hip x-rays. We also thought that I had a hamstrig tesr,

Fellow Travelers,

When I ruptured the disc between L4-5, I went to the hospital complaining of a hip injury. The pain pattern felt like a knife in my hip joint. The hip(s) checked out fine and I later learned (after the pain worsened and filled out in my low back as well as traveling down my leg) that the hip pain was merely part of the overall pain pattern caused by my ruptured disc. The pain pattern in my hips, from the ruptured disc, was confusing to me and my physicians and resulted in several misdiagnosis and months of wasted efforts trying to treat nebulus "pulled muscles" and other ailments that did not exist while the back pain became more acute.
