For those who have had a two- or three-level lumbar procedure, how long was it until you could drive short distance, like 10 minutes or less?
Thanks!

I have Prodiscs at L4/5 & L5/S1 and drove at three weeks but only short distances. My surgeon told me he had no problems with me driving as long as I could do an emergency stop. I only did short distances though. Good luck with your surgery. Lynda

Kirk:
I was naughty. I had my surgery on November 4th, 2006 and arrived home on November 18th. As soon as I got home I started driving right away. Within less than a full month it was Christmas time and I drove over 500 miles one way to our family's in Minnesota. Then I drove my Mother-in-law wherever she needed to go for the whole two weeks we were gone and then I drove over 500 miles home. If you are in good shape let your body do the talking within reason. I was never one to follow the doctor's orders too well. Terry Newton

Kirk, I have 3 lumbar Prodiscs, and I did not drive for at least a month. After that, just very short distances.

After my disc replacement and fusion I was driving to the local shops (10-15 mins) at about 3 weeks much to hubby's horror!
My instructions post-op were if it's comfortable it's OK. MY car's auto so if you're driving a manual (stick) it might be different. The biggest problem....getting in and out of the car. A plastic bag on the seat to swivel on helped. Another thought...if you"re on strong pain meds it's not advisable to drive.
