just saw my neurosurgeon this am. My latest MRI shows that my spinal cord injury had progressed from bad to worse and Doc cannot do anything about it and cannot explain way as the cord seems to befree of any pressure.
However, if i keep geting worse i will need a 2 level fusion at C3/4 and C4/5 which could only be further crearting compression on my cord even the MRi does not exactly shows it. However, the Doc. would not even discuss ADr as he daid my cord is to injured to be suitable to endure ADR. He also wants me to let him know if i am getting worse really fast in order to procede with the fussion although he is not keen on more surgrry. Where this leave me guys? Just suffering and waiting to see if I am getting worse and to what rate and then what?!...A double fusion with hihg risks and no guarantees...I need another oppinion from somebody top nouch. Any sugestions? Bob, Hucky you were saying something about Dr. Malomney and Dr, Kam. I am trying to contact Dr. Scott-Young Cathy as well to bring my November Appt. forward. Do you know how long do you have to wait for Dr. Moloney or Kam. Anybody has Dr Kam's details? Did you guys read last month's Westmead hospital first world performance of fising spine to akull in a 17 hours surgery through the 'nose approach'. Do you know who did it? Please guys, I need all the help in the world. Does anybody know if ADR is now approved in Australia? Hope i here news from somebody soon! God bless you all1 Daniela

Daniela, sorry to hear your problems are worsening. I wish I'd known you were waiting to see Dr Scott-Young, my hubby had an initial consult 2 weeks ago and cancelled, you could have had his.
The magazine article you're referring to with fusion into the skull was in the "Womens Day"and was at Westmead Private hospital. You might be able to look the article up online. Can't help you with anything else except to say keep positive and hope for a solution. Unfortunately the cervical disc replacements still haven't been approved yet but it shouldn't be too far away. Don't despair totally if you end up needing the fusion, there are many who've had them and are very happy with the results. Take care Cathy

I'm sorry about the news. For what it's worth, I'd do what ever you can to see Dr. Scott-Young -- he's really great on so many levels, IMHO. Is he very far from you?

Thanks Harrison and Cathy! Dr. Scott-Young is not very far, about 90minutes+ or so driving at 100-110k/hour, I can't think right know in terms of distance - toomany things through my mind at the moment!
I am trying to see dr. Scott-Young and also to contact Dr. Peter Maloney in Sydney. I could be there in a couple of hours flight. This time it is going to me my very last chance and has to be the best one. i hope I'll have enough time, understanding from my partner and don't have to lose my house for it. Prey for me guys,'cause i had such a bad luck lately...Due to so much stress i started to have a bad bout of gastritis too and skin rushes, my GP says it is all to stress...well...how can't I be stressed!? Kind regards too all of you!

Hi Daniela,
I'm sorry, I haven't checked the board for a while, so didn't see your post. Don't panic, I will get back to you real soon. We have just moved house so I have to go and look for my file with the phone numbers. I'll get back to you real soon. Dr Kam is at Westmead Private Hospital. I'm pretty sure that Dr Maloney is at Dalcross Private Hospital. I'll get back to you. Hucky

Daniela,
Unhappy to hear your situation. Having a mild spinal cord injury myself I can say that you should not necessarily be clammering for ADR - it is not necessarily a good option for narrow spinal canal and an existing spinal cord injury (then again fusion isn't so great either of course) - you need to create space and stability around your spinal cord and ADR won't necessarily provide that because the movement of the operated segment after ADR can still continue to cause problems - particulary if there isn't adequate decompression or there is bone spurring etc. How did the Dr diagnose a progression in the injury? Is it based on MRI signal change, clinical signs, SSEP or combination of these? I really hope you get someone to look after you - you really need an experienced surgeon that has a history of succesful long term care of their patients - because you want to trust that they know the long term effects of whatever they're going to try. How bad are the sci symptoms? What sort of defects are you getting? I hope it stabilises.
