Dear Forum, I have been quite cautious about announcing that my old pain is no more for a couple of reasons: 1) Had LOTS of post op pain and it took a while for things to settle down (he had to "a lot" of work in there to get things right) and I am on the older side at 55. 2) I am slightly and embarrassingly superstitious -- like to believe I am a man of science One thing I don't understand is why Dr.Carl Lauryssen, Beverly Hills is not mentioned more often in these forums? My wife Laura (also a medical background and perfectionist) found him after doing extensive research. I am, at this point in any case, a self pay patient, and could have gone to anybody pretty much. We saw two other Neurosurgeons and an Orthopedic Spinal Surgeon, before choosing Dr, Lauryssen. He was very interested in our inputs and answered Laura's long list of extremely well researched questions with aplomb. He treated us with the utmost respect and never spoke down to us. He has that casual, comfortable manner amd moves from serious to humorous easily and naturally. I've heard it said that this charm is common among South Africans. Dr. Lauryssen's CV in Spinal Neurosurgery, (training and education) is impeccable and quite impressive -- he was Associate Professor, Department of Neurological Surgery Washington University School of Medicine from 1996-2002 (Barnes-Jewish). He is extremely well published and very much a key opinion leader (without the disadvantage of spending too much time on the speaking circuit, thus compromising keeping the hands wet). He has spent much time on the design of devices and the perfecting of techniques. His staff went well beyond the expected to accommodate our schedules -- being out-of-towners and all. His hospital, Olympia Medical Center, Beverly Hills, was outstanding also, A clean and modern facility with a wonderful professional staff. Never once did I feel my wishes were ignored or compromised. Believe me, I know hospitals too, having spent decades working in them. One shouldn't let the Beverly Hills address intimidate. I found the financial details quite competitive. I cannot say enough good about Dr. Carl Lauryssen -- he mended my very badly injured neck, and for that I will always be grateful. Sincerely, Bob West
