Default Patch over ADR in case of possible revision

In reading through threads about revision surgery, I read Phylly's post (http://adrsupport.org/forums/showpos...0&postcount=32) where she talks a little about how when she had her ADR surgery, there was a patch placed over the ADR. This patch prevented blood vessels from attached themselves to the artificial disc, thus making revision surgery much easier and less risky.

So what is this patch? What is it made of? Why isn't every ADR surgeon using it? Should people about to undergo ADR surgery insist on getting it?

ref: http://www.clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/re...spine+adhesion

The medical community has and is testing various forms of adhesion protection (synthetics, ...) My limited understanding is adhesions make secondary surgery more difficult.

Ideally, there is no secondary surgery after ADR, or Fusion. However, in some cases of Fusion, or ADR, a revision may be required.

Good question. There are positives and probably negatives as a result of an adhesion barrier. An adhesion barrier may be used and never mentioned to the patient.

I have it in my spine; Dr. Regan made a point to mention to me that he uses it for ADR. I believe he mentioned it as a best practice in the Charite study that he co-authored back around 2004 timeframe.
