Three years ago when I first began researching ADR, even as a layman with no knowledge of the spine it was very natural to imagine, when envisioning evolution of artificial discs, that artificial discs would continually and increasingly function and resemble our naturally given discs.
I think the Axiomed's polymer Freedom Disc design closely resembles natural discs and this CAdisc from Ranier even more so. It looks great. My hope for this design and others to come is that function and durability will never be sacrificed simply for sake of a streamlined, natural appearance. I'm pleased to see what looks to be some progress. Is anyone familiar with this disc? I attached a screen shot.

Thanks for information. This may help address the question from the US side:
http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/N...+Ranier&rank=1 It looks like they are not recruiting, but I can't speak for the UK. Are you in the US or UK?

Thanks very much for the link. I'm in the US.
I like the concept of this artificial disc in theory but cannot determine how on earth this disc adheres to the vertebral bodies. I wonder if the disc is trapped in place somehow, will it be prone to migrating, does it use double sided tape? I'll look into it further. Thank you for the trail link.

Found out it is called the Compliance Artificial disc. Developed, produced and being tested in UK. Apparently it depends on this progression of 'stair-step' ridges which can be seen in the profile view to hold the disc in place. I still can't find any information on preparation of the vertebral bodies or if the disc is merely set in place without any work done to the vertebra.

I am trying to hold out for this option as well. I am in the US and I was orignally vying for a spot in the DASCOR trial beofre it went under. I have also looked into teh NUBAC trial, but they exclude the L5-S1 disc (which is where my DDD is located).
I really feel this is the best apporach (nucleus replacement versus total disc replacement) and I hope something come around soon. If not, I think I will have to settle for ProDisc or Freedom Lumbar Disc. |

Thanks for the info Rev. I've never looked into the dascor method. I think the concept of nucleus replacement is ideal as well. The Ranier disc, in my view, seems to be, to an extent, an in between; it's still a full scale artificial disc but seems less compromising of the vertebral body (no large keels) and more easily removed should it need to be. And from the reading I've done on ADR revisions, Lord help me, the more easily reversible a disc the better. But at what price? Will a disc such as Ranier stay in place by gravity and a few ridges alone -- looks like the trials will provide some results very soon. Going to post this with the UK board as well to see if anyone's considering the trial.

If I knew of a specific date that the Ranier product would be available I would actually wait in misery. I think it's so fundamentally better than the current flat metal plate designs that it's worth the wait. I would do anything I could to get into the trials underway right now. They are recruiting in Europe.

The problem with new improved products in the US is that the FDA takes years to approve anything. Look at how long the Maverick, Activ-L, etc. have been held up. Most people can't wiat years and years.

I emailed Ranier June 3rd just out of curiosity about US availability. Here's the reply from Louisa at Ranier. A very nice woman:

Thanks Carson. I'd love to know two more things:
- How can a US citizen get into one of the clinical trials happening now in Europe or elsewhere. - Is it ever possible here, in Europe or anywhere else for a physicians who is not involved in their trials to be able to use the CAdisc product on a patient privately?
