Dear all,
I had a discectomy in 1999 when I was only 17. I've been Ok until this October when I started having lower back pain. I went to the doctor and she made an appointment for me to take an MRI and an 'injection'. I couldn\t ask what kind because I'm in slovakia right now and I don't really speak slovak. Can any types of injection to lumbar area be risky or result in disastrous consequences? (i just can't trust a dr. who doesn't speak english...) |

Dom:
Any injection has risks as well as possible benefits. Some epidurals use steroids such as cortisone as well as a cocktail of other medications; i.e., lidocaine, etc. The other possible risks involve infection, hitting a nerve, or any other possible thing could occur. On the other hand, it could temporarily relieve your pain and help you tolerate life better. I had ADR surgery a little over a year ago. I have had some facet issues pre-surgery that did not go away and I also have some SI joint issues. I have had three sets of injections in the last year and am scheduled for an SI joint injection next week. I usually have gotten about 2 months of relief after the injections which has made the pain much more tolerable. Less pain = Better attitude and outlook on life = How bad is the pain is what you have to ask yourself. And, if it is bad, it may be worth the risks. Good Luck. Terry Newton

Ask for an interpreter to be provided so you can understand what the doctor is proposing for treatment and what your condition is, etc., It's hard enough to understand this medical stuff in English and trying to get it in a foreign language would be impossible.
