To the veterans I'd like to ask-
How long has it taken you to feel 100% recovered, have full mobility and perhaps even play sports? I just had my ADR 2 months ago and I've been going through some ups and downs. Obviously in time I will notice my own body recovering and limbering up but I'm wondering approximately how much time i should look at for complete recovery. Thanks. |

Hi
I can only tell you from my own experience. 5 months plus first surgery (5 years ago) I'd forgotten I had ever had a bad back. The healing period was quite a struggle. But as for sports-that's a question of what sport, how fit you are/were, what your physio and surgeon reckon and most importantly what you really think deep down yourself. My advice for the future long term is don't kid yourself if you might have a weak back underneath all the pain relief you hopefully will have. BEST BUDDY YOUR BACK! I had my 4 level ADR done November 4, 2006 and was snowshoeing by January and back on a bicycle by April. I pedaled over 2,000 miles on my bicycle this season so I would say that makes it where you can participate in a sport. Don't try bodybuilding, boxing, etc. Sports within reason.

If you were to look at all the patients over a 2 year period, applying your criteria, I'd say 75% of them are recovered in 9-18 months.
Many one-level folks like me typically recover much faster. These days, 3+ years post-op, I am playing squash, biking, etc. Regardless, all post-op people should take it slow in the first few months...
