Member Guidelines & Code of Conduct

Member Guidelines & Code of Conduct
Revised December 2008

Our shared community goal is to foster an environment where people feel respected and supported. Remember that our global community is publicly accessible and is read by many people around the world. These guidelines clarify these principles to help maintain a peaceful community. We aspire to help people, so understanding and following these thoughtful principles of respectful communications will help us all learn, share and support one another.

Required Code of Conduct for Participation:

1. Judgement. You are responsible for any actions you may take based on information you receive while online. Please use your own good judgment when evaluating information provided through the discussion forum. The decision to share information or conduct transactions with anyone is your own -- conduct your own research before making any decisions. Nothing communicated in any discussion forum should be construed as medical or legal advice, regardless of the source.

2. Relevance. Please keep your posts relevant to the ideas expressed in the Forum when sharing personal experiences. You should not use the Discussion Forum as a vehicle to promote your business. Do not spam other members in any way, e.g. do not email or private message members unless it relates to the forum topic. It is NOT acceptable to post information on any commercial product or service. Do not post messages or upload files that contain photos, software or other material protected by intellectual property laws, rights of privacy or publicity, or other applicable laws.

3. Reputations. If reporting on a positive or negative experience with any medical professional, maintain a constructive post by sticking to the facts. Remember, the goal is to help the community -- not to destroy (or inflate) people’s reputations.

4. Conflict of interest. If you are employed in a business that relates to the member community (e.g. medical for-profit, university, lawyers, spine, insurance, law enforcement) do not hide or obfuscate your identity to post or collect information. We welcome participation from medical professionals, but disclosure of any affiliations with such parties should be made known in your profile and signature. Spine brokers and/or affiliated parties that “sell” access to spine doctors are not permitted access.

5. Disruption and instigation. Do not engage in any disruptive activities on any forum, such as off-topic postings or comments, or statements that might incite other members to violate these guidelines or participate in questionable activities. Refrain from "trolling", i.e. posting topics or opinions that are designed to provoke a negative response from members. Refrain from using offensive language. If you have any doubts about whether a particular statement might be considered offensive by other members, do not post it. Do not use profanity. Treat others as you would expect them to treat you. Personal attacks or any type of "flaming" of other community members will not be tolerated. Refrain from personal attacks and use constructive criticism not destructive criticism. Members must comply with generally accepted business e-mail etiquette.

6. Identity and honesty. Do not falsely impersonate anyone. Do not misrepresent the source of anything you say or post. When posting, do so on your own behalf (or a loved one) rather than any other party. Represent your own interests as a patient, but DO NOT register with your name or ANY identifying information about yourself. We will NOT delete your profile, posts or information you post online. Be smart about what you share on this site and any other internet site.

7. High Maintenance Members. Any member who requires an extraordinary amount of administrative time or resources from the moderators may lose some or all forum privileges. High maintenance can be defined as causing, creating, or adding excessive difficulties to members or moderators.

8. Problem solving and resolution. If problems occur because of your participation, you will make reasonable efforts to resolve disputes. This means being available via email and/or phone should issues arise. In the event of unresolved issues, members may lose some or all privileges after reasonable efforts have been made to resolve conflicts.
