Medical tourism and Coronavirus

So on Feb. 25th, I booked my trip to go to Spain for my revision surgery. There were only 2 Spanish citizens that tested positive for Coronavirus and they wern't even in country.
Yesterday there were only 45 cases, now overnight there are 69 new cases for a total of 114. Germany is a bit ahead.
I am anticipating that a travel ban to and from many European countries will be suspended.
I feel that I order to protect my grandchildren, our kids and my husband that I should highly and prudently consider postponing.
Any thoughts?!

If it were me, I'd go anyway. But we all have our own level of risk to consider. Virus aside, you could get stuck there if there is a ban. So if you have the time, it could be a short vacation. Number of people you will come in contact with cannot be predicted. Number of Spanish folks not really relevant. If you postpone...until when? What do your loved ones counsel you to do? since you are trying to protect them? If all else fails, you could self quarantine in a nearby hotel once you get home if you really want to be extreme. Surely other folks here will have differing opinions. I've heard that kids are less at risk for this infection, which seems counter intuitive but that is what I heard in the press. Good Luck.

Probably should go now anyway

May not be better by Aug or Sept

Flu is scary too and that starts in Sept.

CDC estimates that so far this season there have been at least 34 million flu illnesses, 350,000 hospitalizations and 20,000 deaths from flu. Antiviral medications are an important adjunct to flu vaccine in the control of influenza.30 mins ago

May as well go now.

I just got back from London on business travel. Didn't go anywhere near Spain but the tone of the travel industry in London was one of fear and tension. What I'd suggest is, if you do push ahead and go, plan on a little extra time before getting on a plane for you body to heal more and your immune system's strength to improve. I can't quantify how much time that might be, but the general feel I'm hearing now is that COVD-19 is just a really bad case of the flu for most cases. A strong immune system is the best line of defense coupled with really smart hand washing and limiting exposure to crowds as the second line. You can't do much about the last when you're flying but the first two are within your control.

Trying to build up before

I am taking extra zinc, L-lysine green tea and elderberry. Spain's Prime Minister is a few days away from making a big announcement about restrictions, so I am waiting to hear that there is a travel ban soon.
They are imposing a 600,000.00 euro fine to anyone breaking quarantine.

What's the finder's fee if we turn you in?!!

Cheryl0331 03-10-2020 12:29 PM

Ha, good question!

Even 1% wouldn't be bad.

Here's something interesting:
As of 4 PM yesterday:

Germany has 1139 cases reported with only 2 deaths.

Spain has 1024 cases reported with 28 deaths.

The U.S.A. has only 472 case, but we have 19 deaths in that small number. That’s scary!

Sounds like we are just as well off in Spain or Germany as we are here.

Cheryl0331 03-11-2020 09:15 PM

Current count of CoV-19

Germany cases 1296, only 2 deaths
Spain 1639, 36 deaths
It just keeps going up. I'm not really afraid to go now more I am afraid that they will close boarders.
Olga at Barcelona Spine Center assures me that things are mostly calm there despite the new cases. Mostly quiet there in Catalonia, probably due to very strict protocols implemented in affected areas, in all hospitals, schools etc.

But they keep watching news and following the information. Hopefully the situation will not get worse and will start getting better when spring arrives.

I have just about 10 weeks. I hope we see reports come down.

Address to the Nation

Well,
I have been expecting this...
President Trump closes the boarder to all flights from Europe to the U.S. for the next 30 days beginning Friday.

I remain positive that the cases will decline soon.
He has not closed flights to Europe, but just from there. If you must travel there, please take precautions and have plenty of credit available to cover a lengthy stay.

Wasn't he referring to non US citizens? Flying through London is common, especially on deals with BA. It's a weird exception
