I haven't been around much in the past month since I've had all sorts of problems trying to reach the discussion boards. Here's an update on what's been going on....

After getting a second opinion about ADR surgery in February and after a road trip to Florida a week after the opinion, I think that I am one step closer to making a decision about having the surgery.

I'm tired of not being able to do things that I was once able to do. Three days ago I hurt my back just trying to put the leash on my dog's collar. The more I think about it, the more I realize that my quality of life isn't what it use to be.

Mark was kind enough to send me a copy of the ADR surgery & I've watched it a few times. I have an idea what I'm in for regarding the surgery. I'm still freaked out by the whole thing.

I see my orthopedic surgeon again in 4 weeks. I think I may just bite the bullet & tell him it's time to get my life back & let's schedule the surgery after I graduate in May. Until then, I'll try to gain as much knowledge as possible about the Charite disc.

Hi Karin,

We all can certainly relate to the frustration at not being able to do the simplest things, and speaking for myself it's probably 'THE' motivating factor towards having this surgery, far more so than the pain itself.

Looks like you've taken a mental step towards the OR, which is evolution in itself. 'Freaked out' is also something we can understand! http://adrsupport.org/groupee_common...icon_smile.gif

Do please keep us informed on your 'journey'--and btw, what are you getting your degree in??

Hi Karin,
well I hope you get an early decision within yourself about what you want to do. A lot of ADR decision-making is being content within ourselves that what we have chosen is the best thing for you. I hope things work out

Not to mess with your head but have you considered ProDisc or any of the experimental trials, e.g. Active-L?

Good luck; it's a decision that I'll be forced into.

Hi there,
Sorry it took so long to respond, I've been trying since Friday to get on the discussion board & for whatever reason, I kept getting denied. http://adrsupport.org/groupee_common...n_confused.gif

Tmont, I am studying to become a paralegal. I will be getting my Certificate in May but intend on continuing until I get my Associates Degree. However, lately I've been wondering if I should have stuck to computer programming to help with the techno hiccups with the board here. http://adrsupport.org/groupee_common.../icon_wink.gif

Ans, I haven't really thought about the experimental trials or ProDisc. My surgeon has done some of the Charite ADR's hence why most of my research has been on that type of disc. I have a really complicated insurance issue between Worker's Comp & No-Fault. (I just can't catch a break injury wise). I can't even imagine being told by my insurance company that they won't pay for ADR & that I have to either have fusion or suffer. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that when I see my Ortho in 4 weeks that we can move forward without worrying about me getting stuck with a $50,000 bill. I wish you all the best in trying to get the help that you need in order to get on the road to being pain free.

Hi Karen,

I sympathize with your plight. We generally make the decision to go forward when so dissatisfied either with living in pain all the time or having no life, that living like that is simply unacceptable.

For me, the decision was easy as I'd already had two discectomies and pretty much had no other options... still I second guessed my decision until the very day of my surgery. I think most others feel the same way and freaking out is a normal response.

Regardless of your decision, I wish you luck with both getting your life back and your education.

Dale
