Has anyone had knee pain which was contributed too by your back problems ? In addition to the common L4/5 lumbar disc stenosis associated "throbbing" in the shin area of my leg I now have occasional severe knee pain .
So far an x -ray of the knee does not show a significant problem with in the knee .
next step will be an MRI of the knee

Tomas,

I had ACL reconstruction surgery on my knee 3 years ago and after my ADR surgery my knee started to hurt for the first time in years. My PT attributed to week gluts and hamstring muscles. From all my laying around post-op.

How is your activity level and strength, can you exercise? Do you spend more time lying around then the average couch potato?

My knee is feeling better as my strength is increasing. Hope yours has an easy fix as well an MRI will tell all. http://adrsupport.org/groupee_common...icon_smile.gif

Good luck

It' all connected! It's a very good question...I think you are the only one who can answer this...time will tell as well.

Many problems like that appear (or reappear) after ADR, as the spine is realigned and effects your gait, posture, etc.

Back in '83 I orginally hurt my right knee squatting because of my back. Had 2 surgeries on right knee since.

Today spent 2 hours waiting in doc's office/xrays and the like. Told that while I have softening of patella and osteoarthritis, have symptoms of L4 nerve root being irritated and thus knee problems.

Referred to PT to see if strenthening exercises will help. I'm hoping so, tho know how I am not the most reliable person about following an exercise regimene, will try tho~

Next week being seen for my back...

Really, the answers can range from what you are suspecting, your knee pain is entirely referred pain from your back, through Harrision's answer, your knee has some irritation caused by misalignment in the back, to the far opposite extreme, your knee IS messed up and could even be contributing to/driving your back pain. An MRI and exam should rule out that end of the extreme and might allow you to decide if Harrison's answer is more close to being correct for you, but the only way to be sure is to fix one or the other and see what happens to the pain level in the one not fixed. Sorry to be so negative.

Yes, since I've not had ADR surgery, I couldn't tell you about your knee being affected by realignment or ? however, stands to reason that's a possibility.

Both of my patellas are congenitally misalligned and with each back surgery I've had, because of more squatting plus just more generalized post op recovery functioning, my right (bad) knee flared up to the point of re bracing and limping pretty fiercely.

I'd be in PT for one thing, and need it for another at the same time...

My best advice is getting a qualified medical opinion from a good knee specialist. Again, while I do have actual knee problems, I also have irritation from the L4 nerve root that is causing some weakeness above, throughout, and below the knee. It's a mixed bag for me tho yesterday it was obvious to the Ortho that the first step would be some stregthening exercises to help with what I have going on w/the knee. He also made a note to the PT dept re my back and next week will address that during my visit (differing insurances cover each area -WC for low back).

You may have had something going on before surgery that never really was an issue until the change in your gait, stance and so forth, or something new or entirely unrelated going on (tho I tend to think things are related one way or another thru torking, gait, stance and so forth..

Good luck, keep us informed if you are so inclined~ Maria
