hello all
what is the standard time before going overseas to contact atm and credit card companys prior to leaving the states?
also is there a problem getting say 2500 euros from the airport. and is there exchange rate fair?
thanks

If you mean using the exchange boothes at airport to get Euros, they charge a steep fee. You might be better off trying to get it through your bank ahead of time or using your ATM card over there to get Euros if your bank doesn't get you on the exchange fees then.

I don't understand the first question.

I did not contact my credit card company prior to going over there. I believe you get the best rates if you use your credit card, like for hotel than exchanging for euros. For all other conversion we went to the bank there to convert the money only did very little at the airport to pay for taxi etc.

Chasswen, I got a pretty good rate from my bank and it only took a couple of days to get the euros. My wife (a shopper) and I brought $1,500 euros and had $120 left before checking out. We put it towards our hotel bill and charged the balance. You'll need at least $250-$300 for Peter (Taxi Driver) depending on how much you use him and tipping. He's great and speaks english really well. How much you tkae depends on the shopping? My back brace 4 weeks ago cost $412.50 euros. Bring a set of towels for the hospital and a DVD player with plenty of DVD's. Good Luck and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions! Ken

Straubing is a very small town and most places do not take credit cards. Both Mark and Peter advised using the ATM for conversion.

Don't forget to get prescriptions filled before going over there. You will be expected to self medicate even while in the hospital so be sure to bring enough from home.

Good luck and best wishes, Dale
