How to obtain exam request for DEXA?
Dr. Desai in Germany wants me to get a DEXA exam. I called our local cash-pay imaging lab, and they need a doctor exam request from a doctor with a USA registration number. I don't have a primary doctor, and in any case my crappy new insurance has a high deductible, which means I pay $250 list price to have a 5 minute conversation and score a DEXA request. Do any of you know a hack to obtain a DEXA request for any kind of reasonable fee? God Bless America.

Do you have a local spine pain management physician? My local guy is GREAT. He did all the imaging I asked for.
You'll need someone to work with for the long-term anyway... As after you get the ADR's, you'll need occasional X-rays to check they are still well positioned. (Like yearly at first?) |
I don't have a US hack but there are clinics in Europe who'd do it for you just at your request. I, Jim, had been diagnosed with osteopenia in my thirties and got DEXA scans from a Munich imaging lab every couple of years, during my trips to support Laura's knee&back visits, until it became clear that my situation wasn't degenerating and my bone mass was stable.

I'm on cash pay, so it's $150 to see my pain doc for a meds refill, imaging, or anything else. I guess I'll drop $60 on an online referral.

Yes. Funcrew wanted a way to get examined in the US. Haven't got a way to do that. On the other hand, a few years back, it was nothing to call the lab in Munich, tell them I'd be in town on these days with my wife, and ask for an appointment for a DEXA scan. No prior approval, no messing with other doctors' offices. It should be said, though, all I got was the exam and lab report. I was on my own for figuring out what I needed to do if the results weren't what I wanted. |
