Now that I am getting back into an aerobic routine, I am thinking about really getting into it...does anyone have any advice about the wristwatch heart monitors? Some of them are pretty cool and include data logging capablities that allows the exporting of your cardio data to your PC to produce reports.

Polar USA seems to be a popular brand...

I used one for years, but on my walks when recovering the monitor part fell out of my watch band so I am now left with a watch band, chest strap and no monitor in the watch!!! LOL. The monitor was at least 10 years old and was great. Most machines that have heart rate monitors built in use the Polar brand. Our bike at the office has(had) it and I can(could) wear my chest strap and get a read off the bike(until they lost the adapter on the bike when we moved our office!!

Our elliptical has the capability but we didn't get that adapeter with it. Anyway, I like them but I tend to just do a count on my neck for 10 seconds and as long as I hit between 24-27 beats I feel I am doing good. Not as accurate as the monitor but close enough for me and a little cheaper!!

You can't go wrong with polar.

Good luck,

Bill

Forgive me you guys; I haven't had ADR surgery yet...........reading your posts I realize that my only use for a heart rate monitor in my current painful non-active condition is to check and see if I'm still alive.

Jeff, what are you doing to try to stay in shape? I know it's a challenge for anyone with a bad back....

JeffreyD 02-14-2005 10:58 AM

My condition has gotten to the point that any movement at all is extremely painful despite meds. My back is always on the verge of "going out". I can't do anything to stay in shape. I can barely sit at my computer. I can't stand for more than a few minutes. The only time I get any relief is when I lie down.
I used to be very athletic; raced motocross for 10 years, riding and racing mountain bikes, skiing, weight training, racquetball, etc.
My remark about heart rate monitors was just for humor's sake; I will consider my ADR surgery next week a success if at some point in my life I want to get a heart rate monitor....you guys give me hope!
Jeff

Harrison, I have used the Polar for a number of years and had passed it on to my wife when I started using the Nike Triad. The Nike has a very clear and easy to read display. The Polar Served me well and returns info pertaining to your most recent workout. You won't go wrong with either.Let me know if you need more info on them. Regards, Chris

I have also used Polar for many years when I was in shape(have the old M32 model.)I mostly used it when I went out running. It made the training more fun when I was abel to measure everything and gave me the extra motivation "to give it all." Many of my friends have some of the latest versions and I haven't heard anything negative about them. Polar is a safe buy.
Good luck!

Sabrine
