Condolences; twenty eight years is a long time to have to manage pain.
Just so we'll have some more information... At what level was your surgery? What was the procedure that was performed? What was the specific diagnosis that you termed a broken facet? Which could mean a lot of things.
From the information that you've provided, I'm not certain that you've received a certain diagnosis. I think that Hooch has given you a very good place to start; that is, seeing multiple doctors to get multiple diagnosis and multiple treatment options. Hopefully they will all converge on the same or at least very similar diagnosis/treatment.
