Chuck,

I don't think they go all the way through. It is a precise measurement of where the notch is chiseled. That is one of the reasons I liked the ProDisc. It took away the doctors gestimations of where to put the plates.

It took 6 week for the bone pain to subside for me. Placing the keel is like breaking a bone and I sure know what bone pain feels like and that was what I felt after surgery. It has to be even greater with 2 levels.
