Depression can cause hypersomnia but not to the degree you are describing--and usually when there is hypersomnia, there is also overeating, not loss of appetite. Your doctor took an easy but incorrect route. Now it's time for him to take you seriously and give you a very thorough evaluation. Please let us know how it goes.
