With all this talk about new beds... the tempurpedic material is called visco elastic. Tempurpedic is the brand name of a company in Sweden. Import fees keep Tempurpedic prices high along with their reluctance to allow discounted pricing.
The 8" tempurpedic bed is made up of 3 layers of different foam materials, the top being visco elastic. There are beds made by other companies that mimic the exact same manufacturing standards.
The things to look for are density, 4.3 to 4.7 is probably optimal. A lesser density might be too soft and a higher density might be too firm. Also, how thick is the top layer or topper. 3 or 4" is ideal for a topper which simply lays atop your existing mattress (make sure your sheets are deep enough). Though you do 'sink in' I don't think it's any warmer than traditional beds.
You might also want to consider the warranty and/or return policy.
Having said all that, comfort is very individual. You can purchase visco elastic mattresses - toppers all over, including ebay, other internet sites, Costco, etc. If you already have a box spring or other foundation, you need not purchase another one (unless it's bad). King size beds, remember to check for CA king vs. king.
Visco elastic pillows might be a less expensive way to determine if you like the material.
