Hi Kim,
You and Dean must be so relieved the surgery part is actually over.
I also had a very hard time with pain control in the hospital. I ended up leaving with an oxycontin prescription, but I had a hard time taking this as I felt so out of it and had nausea. I went to see my PM Dr after being home a week. He put on the fentanyl patch which for me has been working great. Don't worry too much about the meds I think it's a little trial and error what will work best for him. Eventually he will figure out the best one.
I am so glad surgery was successful and Dean can now start on the road to recovery.
