I have just come away from the UK television programme called Richard and Judy, having seen a British lady called Kim Gould who has had successful stem cells surgery.

12 months ago this lady had her spinal cord severed in a riding accident with a three centimetre gap between the ends of her spinal cord. They have taken stem cells from inside her nose, and implanted this filling the three centimetre gap between the two ends of her spinal cord. This surgery was done in Portugal. It showed part of the operation and I am not sure if it was an anterior approach or not.The entire interview was about 10 minutes.

They showed us televised pictures of her walking with a walking frame.

She was paralysed from the breast level downwards previously.

When interviewed she said that now sensations were coming down to lower back and legs and had been measured at her hamstrings. There seems no doubt that this has been hugely successful surgery, and this is probably one of the pioneering successes showing us the future.

No one was entirely sure where this was being shown tonight but they did say the National geographical television programme.

Its about stem cell with regard to a heart transplant I see on National Geographical TV at 7pm UK time, this other might be on as well its an hour long programme.

MIRACLE CELL
Miracle Cell, is on the National Geographic Channel at 7pm on 4th January 2005.UK time

Best wishes,
Alastair

Well I taped the programme, and reran it later on, it was totally amazing that spinal cords could be renewed and mended by small stem cells from inside patients nose.

It was amazingly interesting also to see how stem cells actually rebuilt and strengthened heart muscles even in an 85-year-old. I'm not saying this is the way ahead for ADR but for people with spinal cord injuries it certainly is. One of the surgeons was an American I can't remember his name -- -- -- this has been going on since 2002 -- -- --

Alastair, great post... thanks for the info and thanks for the call.

I believe that in my lifetime, I'll see spinal cord repair. It's a shame that Chris Reeve won't be here to see it. We can help make it happen... donate here:
