Hey Kim & Dean,

I'm so sorry to hear about your brother in-law...and I also know how stressful of a time this is for you already without anything else going on. Kim I just did some quick reading on the flesh eating disease , and basically said that people that come in contract have a VERY low risk of contracting it..so the good news there is you and your kids dont have to worry about being in contact with it.
Once again I am so sorry to hear the news and you all will be in my thoughts.

Everyone,
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your replies. I've spoken with the on-call doctors for our pediatrician and for Dean's surgeon, Dr. Yue. Sean, thank you for the quick research. I was told the same, in a nut-shell, that we would have been contacted by the Health Dept. if we were in a position to need medical precautions. It's unlikely to be transmitted, maybe by sharing utensils, and if your immume system is weak, etc. We also have not seen Gary this week.

Regarding Dean... the on-call for Dr. Yue said he'll try to reach him, but Dr. Yue is out of town. I emailed Dr. Yue, as well.

I need to be the one to hold this house together right now, even more than the last year of Dean's injury. I'll post again when we discuss surgery with Dr. Yue. Keep those prayers coming...

Kim

We've been informed that Yale has changed Gary's diagnosis from flesh eating disease to a massive bacterial infection and Toxic Shock Syndrome. It's NOT a contagious situation. It's still critical for Gary at this time, but he has a glimmer of hope for surviving.

We reached Dr. Yue and surgery is still a go at this point, as there has been no dangerous exposure to anything. Dean is mentally on a roller-coaster, thinking of his poor sister and family, but his health should be okay.

We again, thank you all for your thoughts and prayers. It's scary enough just to go into ADR surgery, and encouraging words from people who understand help SO MUCH!

I went to Yale and paid for Dean's surgery today. While I was there I got some encouraging news that might interest some of you. Today we were denied by HealthNet; HOWEVER, Dr. Yue's secretary was told by HealthNet that we NEED to appeal it because HealthNet is considering changing it's policy on covering ADR!!! She said she has never been told anything like that by an insurance company before! We'll see what happens... I will try!

So all is a go right now for Dean's big day. I'm just hoping his mental state is okay with what's going on with our brother-in-law. (No new news on Gary yet.)

Kim, that is such great news about HeathNet - it sounds like the insurance company might be making a step in the right direction!! Good luck with your appeal, I hope it works out.
