If we combined all the research we as a community have done collectively...it would be about the same amount of time it took to launch a man into space! So how can we leverage all this work?

This is one of many reasons why I am interested in the next generation of the Internet -- often referred to as "Internet 2.0" by cyber pundits. Soon, I'll be deciding on which "community research service" we could be using to help people share research resources. I am leaning towards http://del.icio.us/ If you have other ideas of helpful insights, please do tell!

If you'd like more information on this phenomenon that can help all of us, check out another example of how the world is coming together to help one another:

Rich,
I agree with your assessment of the info we have assembled here. Being technologically in the Dark Ages, I'm not sure what the community research service idea means or how it works, even after reading the wikipedia article. But if it spreads the good word, so much the better!

I'm not clear what you mean by "leverage this work". Could you be more specific?

Years of pain, discectomy, research into anatomy, hardware, clinical trials, facilities, surgeons, techniques, insurance. Attempts at ProDisc, Activ-L trials. Now, low bone density. D'oh!!!

At 61 years, no longer qualifying for trials due to my age (chronological, not physical or mental).

2009 - Working on improving bone density or getting rich so I can go to Germany, where medicine and insurance have gone beyond the Stone Age.

Sharing booksmarks with others is one huge benefit. Here's more from the del.icio.us site...

del.icio.us is a social bookmarks manager. It allows you to easily add sites you like to your personal collection of links, to categorize those sites with keywords, and to share your collection not only between your own browsers and machines, but also with others.

You can access your list of links from any web browser. By default, your links are shown to you in reverse chronological order, with those you've added most recently at the top. In addition to viewing by date, you can also view all links in a specific category (you define your own categories as you add the links), or search your links for keywords.

What makes del.icio.us a social system is its ability to let you see the links that others have collected, as well as showing you who else has bookmarked a specific site. You can also view the links collected by others, and subscribe to the links of people whose lists you find interesting.
