I have been wondering for awhile if there is any connection between the quality of fingernails, which in my case are extremely brittle, and the state of our disks. My grandmother also has DDD and her nails are very brittle like mine. I have also always noticed a change in my nails when going through a period of bad health or a particularly stressful time. They become more transparent. Just a curiosity on my part. Do many of you with DDD have particularly breakable fingernails?

(And as an aside, I have decided to try to move more and eat less in order to lose 15lbs I have put on since my back got really bad. If anyone out there wants to try to do the same PM me and maybe we can support one another.)

Interesting question. Some say you can learn a great deal about a patient's condition from the appearance of the finger and toenails. Take a look here:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003247.htm

It's almost a given that most people have some degree of DDD, right? Perhaps it makes sense to check your results from your last blood test. Take a look at your liver function, iron and minerals, etc.

Just my layman's .02

My fingernails have been thin and flexible (the opposite of the rest of my body, lol) since childhood. They don't break when they get too long, they TEAR.

My mom is the same, but has no back problems I know of. My back is ok (touching wood, throwing salt over shoulder and walking in figure 8 around chair) for now....

My nails and hair have always been strong and healthy, coinciding with many years of multi-level DDD.
