Many people would argue to try the MIS approach first; but some others would say not to "waste your time." A conservative approach is "easier" to support as it implies less risk!
That said, the statistic the doc offered is one of many indeed. Take a look through these posts: Open Discectomy Study (Korea) Discectomy, Factors w/Recurrent Herniation & Disc Height Loss: 2009 Spine Sep Should a Endoscopic Discectomy be tried first? has anyone had success w/discectomy? Just remember, there are many, many variables in this kind of procedure. As you read through the topics (please read every one!), you'll see what I mean. I hope this helps. Good luck with your surgery too! Four days and counting...

Harrison, I looked over everything that is on the board concerning discectomies, which included the links you sent me. I've had four opinions for four different doctors, and they all told me the same thing, that is, according to my MRI, X-Rays, and my gerneral good health, that I do not need a ADR, that a properly executed discectomy will work fine. I'm not looking forward to the surgery, but I'm sure would like some relief from some off this pain so I can get back to work and provided for my family. I've had surgery before, and like a lot of people on this board, the hardest thing for me was taking it easy after. But, I plan on following the post op instructions to the letter. I am planning on writing up follow up to the procedure so I can maybe help someone else out. Thanks, Tierney
