Sonja,

Am I missing something? It doesn't really seem like you have medical insurance. It seems more like a catastrophic or umbrella plan to prevent you from going into bankruptcy if you need surgery in the U.S.

These types of plans are pretty popular, in a way they are what you NYGene stated but at a fairly inexpensive bye-in rate. If young and do not need a lot of medical care they work great because you save quite a bit compared to a more comprehensive plan but have protection if something major happens. If you are disciplined enough to put some money in an interest bearing account for the years that you may have to reach the deductible you would probably be further ahead, especially considering all the things a "great" plan would not pay for like back surgery overseas!

Gene, as Patti says its more for catastrophic than anything else. I have been denied insurance because of my back so the only option open to me was the federal governments plan that runs in conjunction with the state of Utah.

It's called 'Federal HIP Utah', unfortunately my premiums and deductibles went up from $323 per mo and $6000 with zero after the deductible was met to $389 and $7000 with 20% after the deductible was met. I turn 60 June 30th so I pretty sure my July payment will go up again. When you can't get insurance you really have no choice.

It was ok the last 3 years as I knew no matter how bad I got the max i was out for the year was around $10k, (premiums and deductible) and i usually paid the max because of my back, now......

Still I can't complain, at least I do have insurance of a sort, many don't.
