So my story started several years ago. I've always had back pain, but just chalked it up to aging. I started a fitness class and while doing jumping jacks, I had a burning sensation in my foot and lower back and pain running down my butt to knee. Fast forward after countless therapy, injections and chiropractor appointments, I have DDD and sciatica. I have a wonderful neurosurgeon who feels I would be a good candidate for ADR, but insurance has fought me. They approved a fusion, but I fought for the adr and finally after 5 months, they have approved it! I haven't scheduled it yet for fear that I'm not in enough pain for it. I'm just worried about the recovery and seeing so little on this scared me. Can anyone shed some light on this? I'm 42 and active (well, was active) and don't want to be miserable!

Sort of sounds like me. I ruptured my L5/S1 while running sprints. I too had had mild lower back pain, but just chalked it up to the rigors of the army. But running sprints that day was the straw that broke the camels back. I’m not in unbearable pain right now, but it seems to come in cycles. If I try to run, my back will hurt afterwards. If I push it more, it seems to trigger an inflammatory response where my back hurts so bad I’m hobbling around and the sciatica down my right leg gets bad. So I finally decided to seek surgical help (PT and chiropractic didn’t help). I’m scheduled for ActivL ADR in about a month. Figured I’ll go ahead and do it now before my facet joints wear out and precludes me from getting an ADR. I’m 31 years old.

What is your diagnosis? Is your DDD at a single level or multilevel, and where do you live? This info would influence the potential path you would take. Your choices for ADR surgery in the states is much more limited.

Recovery all depends on the surgery n the condition you are in now. If your in shape 3 mo ths aint out of the question. I was obese n out of shape been about 2 years and I am in pro athlete motocross racing shape. I had an excellent doctor Rudoplh Bertagnoli I thank God everyday. There hope but plz choose dr carefully !
