Metal Free Cervical Disc??

Hello everyone. Thanks for welcoming me to this site.

I joined this forum to hopefully find answers regarding my ordeal with current cervical implants (c4-5 and c5-6).

I am a patient with confirmed nickel-allergy and presently, I'm collaborating with my spine surgeon to resolve a problematic health caused by cobalt-chrome (with nickel) in Prodisc-C Vivo. X-ray shows bone loss and anterior protrusion. We're looking for the most suitable implant for revision, as soon as possible.

I'd appreciate if anyone could impart any information about Axiomed, Freedom Cervical Disc or any other metal-free disc.

I look forward to feeling healthy again!

Welcome. I'm sorry your circumstances have found you here.

I just posted a response to you on Old Codger's thread. So far, I have not received any responses from anyone on this board regarding my metal allergies on my threads. It is not a common problem for most. I hope the information I shared is beneficial to you. It is a frustrating problem to have because in my experience most the doctors I've seen about it offered no solutions. Several don't believe the results of the blood test. I did find an orthopedic knee surgeon that had some experience with metal allergies. I'm working with him because I have titanium screws in my knee that have been there for over 20 years. Since knees and hips have been replaced a whole lot more than discs, I think they have more knowledge about the issue. I'm going to have the test repeated by another company and also get an MRI of my knee. The x-ray showed nothing remarkable.

I've checked on Cadisc-C--extensively, mate. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has filed for liquidation. There's been a massive recall of Cadisc-L in Germany, therefore Cadisc-C sank as well, together with the whole ship. Twas a sad day for me when I found the news --which answered my question--why haven't they replied to my enquiry? Ah well...

So moving on... I've been looking at Axiomed, Freedom Cervical Disc. Me and and my surgeon have sent them an enquiry regarding material included in the Titanium endplate. Fingers crossed they reply.

Okay; let me ask about this metal allergy thing. I had a two level fusion with plate and screws done in 2007, revision in 2008, and another implant with Roi-c in 2010 and NEVER at any time did any of the surgeons (two in fact) do a metal allergy test. I have had a dental implant three years ago (having another this next January)...all of which are mainly made with Titanium. Is there Nickel in any of the implants that are being used? Lets's focus primarily on the Mobic and the M6....If not why is this a concern? Are they only doing these test once they here you are even remotely interested in ADR??? It sure as heck wasn't a standard protocol when I had my fusion surgery! But they didn't hesitate to put a three level Titanium plate and screws over my fusion! We are exposed to metals; some heavy metals all our lives. If you have real heavy metal allergies you would not even be able to take a multi-vitamin.

The Simplify artifical cervical disc should be going into testing of q4 of 2015, but I cannot find any information on it. HSS seemed to indicate it was a gen2-3 disc ( I have been researching gen2-3 discs that are as good or better than the M6-c).

It has a cermanic core.

It looks like the Simplify disk received permission for one and two level trials starting in March and October, respectively.

The idea of a ceramic core has been tried before with hip implants and caused problems due to poor modulus matching (the ceramic was too stiff) which led to bone loss. In the C-spine, though, that shouldn't be a real problem because the loading isn't as severe. The disk isn't a completely metal-free design; you would need to be sure you weren't sensitive to titanium as the end plates are coated with that to encourage bone growth.
