Following my last round of facet joint injections (negative), both my physiatrist and family doc recommended that I try prolotherapy as they both felt that the pain that was not resolved with my ADR (post-op 2.5 years) is most likely due to micro-instability from lax ligaments. I some confidence in this opinion as Dr. Zeegers also thought that this pain was most likely due to ligament problems.

So, does anyone have any thought on prolotherapy? Risks, successes, failures, and (most importantly) who knows how to do it right?

Thanks so much for any thoughts that anyone may have.

Some members have had this and swear by it, others say its rubbish. Medscape condemned it but you pays your moneys and takes your pick. Its sort of saline injections

Hi Annapurna:

Tried (2) sessions of Prolo.
Think is was an expensive diversion. The best I got was some relief from the anesthetic prep. Their rational is "lax ligaments". I suggest you research Prolo VERY thoroughly, and be prepared if this treatment isn't covered by ins to put out major $ for many treatments.

Besides facet injections have you had an epidural injection?

Good luck!

Actually, I have tried both facet and epidural injections, however, the epidural was performed prior to my ADR, so, I can understand why it probably was of limited effectiveness. You're correct about the cost of prolotherapy - not cheap. On the good side, both practitioners I met with said that if I was going to benefit from the therapy, I would know after the first treatment, so, I only plan to sink major $$$ into it if I see results.
