Default What Kind Of Bed Do You Have?

I'm bed shopping.

I've heard different things. Firmer is better. Others say that isn't true.

I was laying in the Tempurpedic for almost a half hour today at Sleep Train. I'm really thinking that's the one, but again, I've heard both people with back issues give contradictory answers.

I'd like to know what everyone here thinks since I want to pull the trigger soon.

Chronic back pain started in 2010 while shrugging weights that a 40 yr. old shouldn't even try.

MRI in 2012 showing L4/L5, L5/S1 herniations and L2/L3 bulge.

L5/S1 taking on new shape, chronic sciatica, etc.

DEXA bone scan performed 5/7/14 showing mild osteopenia.

Surgery performed July 9th, 2014, Dr Clavel, hybrid three level lumbar.

We have a Tempur-Pedic it doesn't work for us. My wife and I don't care for it. But in the store we both thought it was really great. I think we will go for a firmer mattress next time.

Guys, please read the forum descriptions before you post. This is the description for this one that you posted in (Spinal Roundtable):

Discussion, news and commentaries that delve into all other (non-ADR) spinal procedures. Find threads on fusion, IDET, discectomies, discograms, epidurals imaging (XRays, MRIs, MRNs) and all other procedures here. Pain management, medication and related topics are also here.

Moving this to the Big File which is the appropriate forum.

We tried a Tempurpedic, and it crippled me. I could barely move the next morning, so it went back. I'd have been better off sleeping on a park bench. Thank goodness for the store's 90-nite exchange.

We now have a Sleep Number P5. I'd say it's worth its weight in gold, but I think our pillows weigh more than the mattress.

Default Sleep number

I have had a sleep number bed for almost 10 years and my husband and I love it still. It's adjustable so you can dial it in to what suits you. For me, that has changed over the years due to back pain, pregnancy etc so it's been great. My parents just bought one where the head and feet can go up or down, mine doesn't do that but my dad has had shoulder surgery on both shoulders so a little incline helps him get in and out without too much strain on his shoulders

In the showroom, I laid on the Tempers for 20 min. or so. Felt good, but then online I read where people with herniated discs can't stand them so for now I've stayed away. I like firm, but then on my side I need something to take in my shoulder. I'm kind of wide in the shoulders.

So, I'm thinking a nice firm base with lots of support with a 6 inch topper.

No Temper. Kind of thinking its not in my best interest.

Coming from one who is in bed 20+ hrs/day. I would go nuts if I didn't have my sleep number. But remember my coccyx is whacked and that's why I like being able to adjust the firmness. Day time I'm at 50-55, nighttime sleeping 45 but that's me. My back might be better off firmer but my coccyx wins the argument
