Well I`m sorry I am late on here today folks.
As you know today is the first of May and we take it extremely seriously in the UK. The weather was poor last night and early this morning. We had all on to get the Maypole up and "Young Lennie" missed his breakfast which was serious as he is the "Lead Man " in the Morris Dancers. I took over from him this afternoon (left the Admin here) to do my stint. You can see us here on an earlier occassion http://www.whiterosemorrismen.org.uk/ I don`t know what you do in the USA? I know you take "Thanksgiving" seriously Have a good "Mayday" folks Best Alastair

Happy May Day Alastair! I must say I feel a bit like I'm sending out an S.O.S. by saying that. I perused your link and hoped to find you jumping around in traditional garb. Are you featured in any photographs?

Hi Crystal,
No this was an earlier occassion that was done for the web.You can see if you click on the link "What we look like". I more or less walked through things today. As you can see we have bells strapped to our legs and wave white handkies in our hands. The bells make a good sound no matter if you are stepping high or low, and if you keep in time with your handkies it all looks really good. The schoolchildren danced really well round the Maypole (we had probs with that due to soft ground following lots of rain.) This started way back in the early English traditions and hails the begining of Spring also as a way to ward off evil spirits and try and ensure a "Good Harvest " later on. Best Alastair

Here's to the beginning of spring, warding off evil spirits and ensuring a good harvest! Thanksgiving is I guess a celebration of that good harvest. Many implications here I suppose for the difference in cultures!
May Day here was marked by demonstrations by immigrants hoping to illustrate their impact on our economy. A very different kind of day, indeed.
