I'm thrilled for you bothe. I am praying also. It'll be a rough couple days...but all worth it in the end. Stay positive.

I have a sketchy internet connection so I have to be brief. In a nutshell:
Dean's surgery was well, no complications. Getting control of his pain level was a nightmare last night. Back pain and incision pain at first, then just incision pain. He's sleeping now. He's sat, stood and had a spongebath. Will be walking for the first time soon. Morphine pump was a joke, he has another name for it that I can't repeat. Staff at Yale is great. They're trying to adjust his meds from pump to elixers, as he's scheduled for discharge tomorrow. Meds making him dopey at the moment, but he's been totally coherent at other times. Think it will be fine when that incision heals up. I'll put something together for the surgical outcome forum when I can! Kim

Hi Kim,
You and Dean must be so relieved the surgery part is actually over. I also had a very hard time with pain control in the hospital. I ended up leaving with an oxycontin prescription, but I had a hard time taking this as I felt so out of it and had nausea. I went to see my PM Dr after being home a week. He put on the fentanyl patch which for me has been working great. Don't worry too much about the meds I think it's a little trial and error what will work best for him. Eventually he will figure out the best one. I am so glad surgery was successful and Dean can now start on the road to recovery. Take care both of you!!

Thanks Sharon! It's always helpful to hear from others who had similar experiences. I'll be curious to see what he ends up leaving the hospital with!
Right now they're just hoping his bowels will move along so they can get him solids (necessary for discharge from the hospital.) He had two successful walks this afternoon and he's eager to move around more, so we'll see what tomorrow brings! Kim

Awesome news Kim! Being 4 days post surgery myself, I know exactly what he is going through. Stay on the meds for the pain and do what the doctors tell you. I've been doing my little walks and stretches and taking it easy like they said. The 1st 2 weeks are most important. So glad to hear there were no complications! Kick back and relax and allow his body to heal.
