Long term omega and turmeric use experience?
Anyone know the dangers of taking 3000 mg of omegas and about 1000 mg of turmeric daily, for more than two months, now? Been taking them as alternative to ibuprofen as anti-inflammatory. (Seems to work.) Wondering if I should take a break and go back to NSAIDs for a bit.
Will see primary care next week. Any suggestions on what I might ask her to test for while I get my surgery plan set up? I'm worried about osteoporosis, although still pre-menopause, so she just thinks testing for Vitamin D is enough. Is it? Thanks, Marita

Marita, good for you finding a natural remedy that is working! I can't speak to the risks of the dosages. Personally, I'd be more concerned with the quality of supplements, and the formulation type. So much to know about bioavailability and related issues. Can you find a good ND? Maybe your doc could advise?
We've kicked the D issue around for years. I maintain that it acts a powerful immune modulator, secosteroid and a vitamin. People here that take large doses seem to react digitally: they either feel much better or much worse. Marshall has done years of research on the vitamin D receptor and has built a healing protocol on avoiding D and pulsing with antibx. I was on it for 3.5 years and it saved my life. A blurb on this on pubmed: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19758226 If you are testing for D levels, make sure they test for both D25 and D1,25. The balance between those is thought to be diagnostic, though I can't advise how as this is tricky territory. This is a really juicy topic that delves into the D topic and osteo issues. Lots here: http://www.adrsupport.org/forums/f51...porosis-10179/ In particular, note my 3-25-10 post referencing the amazing work of Phyliss Balch in PDF.

Good osteo info, thanks!
Apprecaite your diligence Harrison, and your "institutional memory". A couple of surgeons have poo-pooed my desire to know my bone density, however I am going to insist, whether I get ADR or fusion.
Thx! Marsha

Also, decided to go back on ibuprofen for a while. Even though the omegas and turmeric seemed to work, I could tell that after two months my digestion is affected and was achey in ways that might be related to them. I'll see what I feel like just on "vitamin i" for a while.

One man had his brain damage completely reversed with mega-high doses of Omegas. CNN.com - Transcripts
So I think we can stand higher doses than we think. What digestive issues were you having? It could be related to the brand, or, you could have undiagnosed food allergies.

Lillyth, thanks for the link. Cool.
PS: Every time I read your screen name I think of Lillyth from Frasier, who is brilliant as a character, as is the actress that plays her.

I love Bebe Neuwirth! Thank you for the compliment! Being an actress myself, I am always happy to compared with her! (Though her character's name is spelled differently: Lilith. To my knowledge, I am the only person in the world who spells it with a double L and a Y.)

I take turmeric, serapeptase and flax seed oil to help control pain and inflammation. I am allergic to NSAIDs and so I needed to find something that would help with inflammation and not cause side effects. I took them 3 times a day for close to 3 years and I'm still alive. I'm not even turmeric yellow, either. Lol!!

Hello again,
I think my "rest" from the omegas and turmeric has helped the digestive problems, and my muscles don't feel quite so achey, for now. Fortunately, I am not in the pain that I see posted on here by others. Just keeping the anti-inflammatories on board to keep the symptoms from the cord compression at bay, as much as possible. Wonder if it's because omegas are fat soluble, so maybe built up in my system? I think turmeric is water soluble, in fact, might not be absorbed well if not cooked? I was takng flax seed, too, but sporadically. When I start phasing out ibu, again, maybe I'll phase in flax seed, more than the fish oil. Newleaseonlife - How much of those supplements did you take? What is serapeptase? Lillyth, I was taking Nordic Naturals omega 3...derived from anchovies and sardines. Maybe I should try a salmon oil. Hoping to not have to take anything in high doses in the near future! Marita
