My daughter is only 20 years old and fortunately the doctor requested a bone density test. She is very small 5' 1" and about 95 pounds light skin etc. The doctor felt since she was so petite they would do this just for a baseline.
Well it turned out she has the bones of an 80 year old. Her spine score was -3.6, her doctor has never seen a score this high is someone so young. He did not want to even treat her and wanted her to go to a specialist. Well she is finishing her junior year in college this week (exam time). A week from Saturday we leave on a cruise and she starts her internship that Monday when we return. Well long story short I had to beg two doctors to see her next week. First she needs to have a new primary see her (see was still seeing her pediatrion?) I got her an appointment for Tuesday. The bone specialist could not see her until Novemember but since they did the bone density test their PA will discuss the finding together and she will see her to discuss the course of action. Her orginal doctor then called in all the test (blood work etc) to have all this done so the primary will have the results on Tuesday when they see her. What could cause a 20 year to have these types of results all scores were below -2.5 besides the forearm which was a negative .8. She drinks milk everyday, eats yogurt many times a week? What are your thoughts this is just terrible to have at this age what is she going to be like at 50? Sorry for the rambling but I just cannot believe this is happening to her. Judy

Judy,
So sorry I have no medical knowledge or ideas to share with you on this, and I can only imagine what you're feeling. As a Mom myself, I know the frustration of not having the reason and the remedy at your fingertips. Please do let us know what the Dr says on Tuesday. You might not have the answers now, but every journey begins with a small step, so set your sights on Tuesday and go from there Trace |
